The story behind this piece

A pastoral symphony written in June to July 1875, in about six weeks. It was premiered in Prague on March 25, 1879, conducted by Adolf Čech.

Dvořák gave it the opus number 24, but in 1888 the publisher Simrock changed it to 76 over his objections, making it look like a newly written piece. That's why it was long known as 'No. 3.' He dedicated it to the conductor Hans von Bülow, who had helped introduce his works abroad.

What to listen for

  • Opening of movement 1: Gentle woodwinds unfold a pastoral theme.
