The story behind this piece

Written from October 1817 to February 1818. It's called "Little C major" to tell it apart from No. 9, "The Great," which he wrote later and is also in C major. It was first performed publicly in 1828, the year Schubert died.

What to listen for

  • Listen to it back to back with No. 9, "The Great," also in C major, and compare "little" and "big"
