The story behind this piece

Written around 1774, it is, together with No. 25, the best-loved of Mozart's early symphonies. It uses a small ensemble: two oboes, two horns, and strings only.

The first theme of the 1st movement begins with a note that drops a full octave, and the last movement's theme begins with the same octave drop, so the beginning and end are linked.

What to listen for

  • Opening of the 1st and 4th movements: compare the octave-drop themes
  • 2nd movement: muted strings sing quietly and delicately
