The story behind this piece

In the autumn of 1783, Mozart and his wife stopped in Linz on their way back from Salzburg to Vienna. Count Thun heard the news and arranged a concert right away, and Mozart wrote a new symphony in about four days. It premiered in Linz on November 4.

It is the first of Mozart's symphonies to begin with a slow introduction. It is a majestic introduction that recalls Haydn's style.

What to listen for

  • Introduction to the 1st movement: it opens slow and majestic, then moves into a fast Allegro
  • 2nd movement: a siciliana in 6/8 that sings with a gentle sway
