The story behind this piece

Written from December 1814 to March 1815, it is dedicated to Innocenz Lang, the headmaster of the boarding school Schubert had attended. It was never performed publicly in Schubert's lifetime, and wasn't given its first public performance until 1877, at the Crystal Palace in London.

What to listen for

  • 2nd movement: one theme and five variations. It is the only variations movement in Schubert's symphonies
  • 3rd movement: a minuet that drives forcefully along in C minor
