The hardest parts and tips
First sound (embouchure)
Lip shape, angle, and air direction all have to line up to get a sound
Tip: Five minutes daily on the headjoint alone, in front of a mirror, like blowing across a bottle top
Breathing and dizziness
Flute leaks the most air of the wind instruments
Tip: Diaphragmatic breathing, rest during long phrases, and work in 10-minute blocks for the first few weeks
High octave
You have to raise the octave with your lips alone on the same fingering
Tip: Octave exercises (harmonics), angle the air slightly upward
