The hardest parts and tips

Finding the right note (overtones)

The tubing is long, so more than 10 notes sit close together on one fingering. Your lips have to be accurate

Tip: Sing the note in your head before you play it, do lip slurs daily, and use a tuner drone

Right hand in the bell

The depth of your right hand in the bell changes intonation and tone

Tip: Fix your hand shape with your teacher early on, and check in a mirror

Endurance

The mouthpiece is small, so the strain on your lips is high

Tip: 20 to 30 minutes daily, with a 1-minute rest every 10 minutes of playing

Find a teacher

Few people major in horn

Tip: Local orchestra members, university horn majors, and online lessons are all common
